FINALLY I started this challenge! Sorry I’ve been ridiculously busy and it’s not going to get any better so please bear with me (I seriously just looked up if its bear or bare!). 😀
Day 01 – A book series you wish had gone on longer OR a book series you wish would just end already.
So I know it’s an either/or question but I’m going to answer both!
A book series I wish had gone on longer:
This is a tough one because there are tons of great series that ended too soon BUT at the same time every time a series decides to continue, after the author already said that they wouldn’t continue, it’s always a disappointment! That being said one of my all-time favorite series (after Harry Potter, of course) that has ended is the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead.
Synopsis for the first book from Goodreads:
St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger… Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.
Why It Should Have Gone On Longer:
Okay, I know that it already has 6 books and that’s a lot already but honestly I fell in love with each and every character. Rose and her love interest, Dimitri are just perfect! ❤ There’s tons of drama and action with bits and pieces of a love story. While the love story is important it doesn’t overtake the action; it’s the perfect balance.
In this story there’s not only Vampires, but also Dhampirs and Strigoi. Dhampirs are a hybrid species; half human, half vampire. Dhampirs can’t reproduce amongst themselves, only a Dhampir and Vampire can or a Vampire and a human but that’s frowned upon. Vampires and Dhampirs are, for the most part, the good guys and Strigoi are completely evil. They are the only ones that can drink a human to death and kill without mercy.
There’s also a hierarchy that they all live by. Lissa, Rose’s best friend, is from one of the twelve royal families, then comes normal Vampires, Dhampirs, and lastly Strigoi.
There’s also a spin off of this series called the Bloodlines series, which features a lot of the same characters but is told by someone else’s point of view (she doesn’t come into the Vampire Academy series until the fourth book so I don’t want to ruin the surprise!). This series is just as exciting but you really need to read Vampire Academy first if not you’ll be completely lost.
Series I Wish Would End Already!:
Sometimes there is such thing as too much of a good thing. One example of this is The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare. This series was originally supposed to have only 3 books but for some reason they continued it and now its just been super long and drawn out (which is exactly what I was talking about earlier: whenever authors continue after they said they wouldn’t the books are almost always a disappointment!). There are now 5 books with a 6th on the way. If you had asked me at the end of the 3rd book what I thought about the series I would’ve said that it’s one of my favorites but now I just think that she should just stop while she’s ahead.
One thing that really annoys me is that for the past 3 books or so the 2 main characters have been toying with the idea of having sex. Honestly, I don’t care if they do it or not but please STOP talking about it! If that’s supposed to be some sort of hook it’s not working for me. Also, just about everything that could ever go wrong has already gone wrong so it’s like: What’s next?! This series is now being adapted into a movie, so that should be interesting.
Now I will continue to read The Mortal Instruments Series until the very end, but there is one series that I just had to give up on and that’s The House of Night Series by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. Honestly, I can’t even pinpoint at what part I decided to give up but it was just getting to be too much. I believe I stopped around book 8 and it’s now on book 10 with a ton of little novellas in between and it has no end in sight. I just feel that a couple of books just don’t go anywhere; they’re completely pointless, you don’t learn anything new and nothing exciting happens. The main characters are dull and at times I found myself really disliking them. Every single book mentions a fast approaching evil yet it’s been 10 books and it apparently got lost along the way because it still hasn’t arrived; just how high are the stakes gonna get?
