How My Summer Went Up In Flames by Jennifer Salvato Doktorski

Synopsis by Goodreads:

First she lost her heart. Then she lost her mind. And now she’s on a road trip to win back her ex. This debut novel’s packed with drama and romance!

Rosie’s always been impulsive. She didn’t intend to set her cheating ex-boyfriend’s car on fire. And she never thought her attempts to make amends could be considered stalking. So when she’s served with a temporary restraining order on the first day of summer vacation, she’s heartbroken—and furious.

To put distance between Rosie and her ex, Rosie’s parents send her on a cross-country road trip with responsible, reliable neighbor Matty and his two friends. Forget freedom of the road, Rosie wants to hitchhike home and win back her ex. But her determination starts to dwindle with each passing mile. Because Rosie’s spark of anger? It may have just ignited a romance with someone new…

My First Thoughts:

I skimmed over the synopsis when I first started reading so other than the fact that Rosie was going on a road trip I had no idea what this book was about. This added a new level of excitement for me because I had no idea what to expect going into it.

My Post-Reading Thoughts:

This was such a cute book! At the beginning I didn’t think that I was going to like it because Rosie was really annoying and nagged a lot but I think that was the authors intention. The story follows Rosies’ journey as she travels with 3 guys cross country. It shows how much she grows between New Jersey and California and by the end I absolutely adored Rosie! I love that she wasn’t perfect to begin with and that she realized that she needed to change her life around. Yeah, she made me mad at times but she was just trying to figure things out, kind of like everyone out there. Along the way she makes great friends, visits places she never thought she would see, and starts planning a better future for herself.

Slight Spoilers: I think, however, that the synopsis isn’t entirely accurate. She isn’t necessarily trying to win back her ex the entire time. When she is served with the temporary restraining order she wants to talk to win and figure out what is going on. She’s hurt and still a little bit in love with him but I would say that about halfway through their journey she realizes that he isn’t worth the trouble and moves on.

This book is the perfect summer read and I really couldn’t be happier with this book!
