Book Review: Until It Fades by K. A. Tucker

Rating: 4 Bookworms

Short and Sweet Summary: When Catherine Wright pulls over to help out a crash victim the last thing she expects is to save the life of hockey icon and media darling Brett Madden, and her life is forever changed.

Genre: Contemporary Romance

My Review:

I’ve seen her pull this same trick on our golden Lab, Bingo. He thinks he’s going to the park, so he eagerly jumps into the backseat, his tail wagging and his tongue lolling, only to end up at the vet. Falls for it every damn year. This is so much worse than a trip to the vet.

K. A. Tucker is definitely a one-click author for me and this book only helped solidify that status. She has a way of bringing all of her characters to life and making them completely relatable. Catherine has been through the wringer and has somehow managed to come out on the other side stronger, but more guarded, than ever. Brett knows what it means to sacrifice and work hard to make your dreams come true but his accident will test his perseverance.

I’m operating on pure adrenaline, circling the back of my car to get to the other side, my two-inch heels sinking into the mud, remnants of last year’s bulrushes brushing against my sleeve. Yes. I think I see a shadow behind the spiderweb of cracked glass.

To me this book was about overcoming your past mistakes and not letting them define you. Catherine’s sordid past has the tendency to haunt her and although she’s come a long way she can’t seem to shake it. In her small town she will always be a pariah; ostracized for her past indiscretions. Despite this she has managed to flourish: providing for her daughter, keeping a low profile, and keeping a steady job for several years.

I inhale sharply at the sound of my name on his tongue. I’ve always hated my name. It’s so ordinary. Even the spelling is unimaginative…Hearing Brett say my ordinary, unimaginative name in his deep, gravelly voice for the first time makes me hear a simple beauty in it I’ve never experienced before.

It was also about persevering through obstacles. As the saying goes ‘Anything worth having is worth fighting for.’ So far everything in Brett’s life has come pretty easy; he has a superstar mom and the trust fund to match. That’s not to say he hasn’t worked hard to get to where he’s at but this is the first time in his life that he has truly been challenged. This will be a test of his will and determination and the outcome will ultimately determine his future.

“You took me completely by surprise, that first night I met you. I though you were the most beautiful woman I’ve ever met.”

The pacing of this book was excellent, at no point did I feel like it was lagging. The only thing that I was missing in this book is the heart wrenching, can’t help but bawl my eyes out aspect that I have come to expect (and love) in K. A. Tucker’s books.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between Catherine, Brett, and Brenna (her daughter). It showed some of the struggles single moms go through when they date, I especially had a good laugh when they kept getting *ahem* interrupted by Brenna.

Goodreads Synopsis:

Twenty-four-year-old truck stop waitress and single mother Catherine Wright has simple goals: to give her five-year-old daughter a happy life and to never again be the talk of the town in Balsam, Pennsylvania: population two thousand outside of tourist season.

And then one foggy night, on a lonely road back from another failed attempt at a relationship, Catherine saves a man’s life. It isn’t until after the police have arrived that Catherine realizes exactly who it is she has saved: Brett Madden, hockey icon and media darling.

Catherine has already had her fifteen minutes of fame and the last thing she wants is to have her past dragged back into the spotlight, only this time on a national stage. So she hides her identity. It works.

For a time.

But when she finds the man she saved standing on her doorstep, desperate to thank her, all that changes. What begins as an immediate friendship quickly turns into something neither of them expected. Something that Catherine isn’t sure she can handle; something that Catherine is afraid to trust.

Because how long can an extraordinary man like Brett be interested in an ordinary woman like Catherine…before the spark fades?
