Twilight, the first book in the Twilight Saga, was released on October 5, 2005. It was Stephenie Meyer’s first published book and, in little time, it took the world by storm.
Meyer says that the idea for Twilight came to her in a dream on June 2, 2003. Within 3 months she had written the first draft and, although she never intended to publish it, with her sisters encouragement she started to send the manuscript to literary agencies.
Within 6 months she had written a novel, had it accepted for publication, and had started on the sequel.
Twilight eventually went on to reach first place on the New York Times bestseller list and was named one of Publishers Weekly’s Best Children’s Books of 2005.
In 2008 Twilight was adapted into a movie that grossed over $392 million worldwide.
Although it came out in 2005 I don’t recall reading it until 2007, probably when it was announced that it would be adapted into a movie (I always read the book before watching the movie adaptation). At that time I couldn’t get enough of it; I stayed up way past my bedtime reading it and gobbled up the rest of the saga.
It reignited my love for reading and for that I’ll always be grateful to Twilight and Stephenie Meyer. For a time I couldn’t stop reading vampire fiction because of it; it was definitely the IT genre for a couple of years after Twilight’s success.
Do you remember when you first read Twilight? Are you Team Jacob or Team Edward? Let me know in the comments below!
p.s. I was totally Team Jacob.
